True altruism - Non-identification with thought

True altruism comes by itself when our true nature is recognised and the illusion of the separate self is seen through. When it is seen that there is no separate 'me' then there is no desire to do or acquire anything for this 'me'. Any real care about what happens to the body-mind disappears, and aside from giving it the bare minimum of food, water, exercise, and sleep needed to keep it functioning, its fate is left up to the winds of divine will.

All that is left is to be a beacon of truth and a servant to others.

A lesser form of altruism stems from the desire to be good. In this 'trying' to be good by helping others, notice that there is a lot of ego involved. There is an identification with being a 'good person' and thus the sense of separation is reenforced. While being a 'good person' is better than being a 'bad person, the best is the recognition that there is no person at all!

Another way to express this is to look at identification with thought. While a good thought is better than a bad one, the best is non-identification with thought entirely.

Why? Because the idea of being a person, good, bad or otherwise, is simply that; an idea, a thought!

In this non-identification, there is no sense of separation, no 'little me' to worry about.

This is the pure knowing that naturally births pure altruism. A service untainted by mind, in alignment with truth, and an expression of love.
